....innate self-selection

Youtube: A dog self-selecting with the Ingraham Academy -

This dog had been in a rescue centre for 4 weeks and during that time had been barking almost non-stop, which was preventing her from being re-homed. She had not groomed, played or allowed herself to be stroked during that time. Watch her behaviour change as she selects plant extracts to help herself.

The pony 'Arthur' in the bottom left of this photo had severe laminitis & had difficulty walking. He selected yarrow & peppermint & also received healing & massage. The next day he was striding out with the herd!

Zoopharmacognosy is the offering of essential oils, aromatic plants, algae, clay and other natural remedies for self-selection. This innate ability allows the animal to select what it needs to bring itself back into balance both physically and emotionally; looking after itself as it would have done in the wild.

We love and care for our animals wanting only the very best, but sometimes events beyound our control causes them emotional upset and stress. Today's domestication and controlled environments inhibit the animal's ability to roam and forage as it would have done to bring itself back into harmony; Zoopharmacognosy gives them back this innate natural ability.

Frequently I have witnessed  immediate calmness wash over the animals as they start to self-select. This thoughtful processing of their selection very often deminishes anxieties and fears, bringing the animal to a place where it is better able to cope and learn new ways of being.

Testimonial: Bayley, 6 year old German Shepherd x Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

My first introduction to Fiona was through Damory Vets in 2008, as I needed help with Bayley's behaviour.  Bayley was very nervous of traffic and as I live on main road she became too scared to venture far from the security of the garden.

But, with Fiona's help that all changed, and as I have two other dogs, Fiona has really changed our lives and I can now take all three out for long walks by the river.

In October 2009 Bayley was diagnosed with lymphoma. I wasn't sure if I could put her through chemotherapy or even steroid treatment. I contacted Fiona for advice.

I wasn't aware at the time that Fiona practiced Zoopharmacognosy, but she soon came to visit Bayley. The natural remedies selected by Bayley have really worked.  The swelling in the lymph glands gradually reduced and now she's lump free.

I took Bayley to the vets earlier this week and I was told that she no longer has cancer!!!! What a result.  The vet said that science doesn't always get it right.

But I know better. Thanks Fiona

Thomas - rescued GSDx approx 6-7 yrs old

Earlier this year (2010) I was lucky enough to meet someone who had called on Fiona's expertise with their rescue dog and enjoyed great success. Around this time I had observed that Thomas was slowing up a little on our walks and seemed particularly reluctant to walk on hard surfaces. Sometimes he would just stand still and would need to be coaxed to move on, yet on grass surfaces he was generally much better. I was concerned that the vet's route would be a lifelong pain management system, with a lengthy list of side effects.

The first session was a great success. Fiona was happily greeted by both our dogs who were very curious as to what she had in her magic box of tricks in her car! Despite the fact I'd only booked the session for Thomas, Fiona kindly allowed our other dog Emma (another rescued GSD, approx 2 yrs), to join in with the self-selection too - I didn't even have to ask, she just said let Emma choose what she needs as well. It was a very informative session, with Fiona explaining what each remedy did. She provided a detailed written report by email the next day, also explaining how I should continue to offer the remedies and offering her ongoing support if I needed it.

At my request Fiona visited again about a month later, offering more remedies and some T-Touch. The transformation in both dogs has been fantastic. Thomas runs far more on his walks now and hardly ever draws up short on hard surfaces. He is brighter and more curious than before (his history pre-rescue was unknown and his reaction to things that unsettle him is to 'shut down'). He and Emma play far more often and for longer periods, which is lovely to observe. Although both dogs were in 'good' condition before, they are now in better condition than ever, really shiny thick coats, bright eyes etc, and Emma is now carrying the right weight for her build - we had struggled before to keep weight on her and when Fiona first saw her she was a touch on the skinny side.

What was the test to knowing this work?
We went away last weekend, and the dogs were at home with a friend but with no remedies for two days. On our return we took them out for a run - on the way home Thomas drew up again on the hard surfaces. After offering the usual remedies that night he has been fine all week. That proves to me all that I need to know!

Also, Emma had been nervous in training classes. Fiona suggested some essential oils to put on a bandana around her neck - the effect is measurable, she is a far calmer, quieter dog with the help of these oils.

So, for anyone thinking about approaching Fiona about zoopharmacognosy I would say go for it! Fiona has a wonderful calm quality about her and she cares deeply about the work that she is doing for the benefit of the animals.  She is very knowledgeable, explains things in an accessible way and supports her clients really well via written reports, follow up emails and the offer of ongoing support if needed. I am very happy to recommend Fiona - in fact I've already sent her details to one of my friends.

Testimonial: All well with us; the dogs are in great form. Have noticed a lot of improvement. Jack is clearly much happier. The black patch is no longer hot and he seems much looser when he moves and sits. He doesn't squeal when he moves or gets up and is much less jumpy and nervous. His coat has improved and the bald patches are growing back.

Laragh is much more chilled. She still has a great sense of fun but when she is in the house she doesnt wreck her bed or fly around as much.

Sonny is much more independent. He will sit in a different room from us and is more confident. He is very happy.

All the dogs' coats have improved, am sure the oils have helped with that too.
